Blair Witch
The lore of the Blair Witch is a fascinating blend of historical folklore and modern
storytelling, centered around the mysterious figure of the Blair Witch, believed to
haunt the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland.
Origin of the Blair Witch: The legend begins with Elly Kedward, a woman exiled from
the town of Blair in the winter of 1785 after being accused of witchcraft by local
children. She was presumed dead from exposure, hung on a tree with stones tied to
her limbs. The following year, all of her accusers and half the town’s children
vanished, prompting the remaining townspeople to flee and vow never to utter “Elly
Kedward” again.
Eileen Treacle Incident: In 1825, during the first annual Wheat Harvest Picnic after the
town was rediscovered and renamed Burkittsville, a young girl named Eileen
Treacle drowned in Tappy East Creek under mysterious circumstances. Witnesses
claimed to see a ghostly hand pull her in, and her body was never recovered.
Following this, the creek became clogged with oily bundles of sticks, and the water
became unusable for thirteen days.
Robin Weaver’s Encounter: In 1886, eight-year-old Robin Weaver met an old woman
in the forest whose feet “did not touch the ground.” Robin followed her to an
abandoned house and waited in the basement, but the woman never returned.
When Robin eventually emerged, she found that time had passed differently
outside, and her disappearance had sparked a search.
Massacre of the Burkittsville Seven: Centuries later, the lore continued with the
massacre of seven people in the 1940s, which was attributed to a hermit named
Rustin Parr. He claimed the Blair Witch compelled him to commit the murders.
The Blair Witch Project: The lore was popularized by the 1999 film “The Blair Witch
Project,” which presented itself as a documentary about three filmmakers who
disappeared while investigating the legend. Their footage, found a year later,
suggests they were victims of the witch’s curse.
The Blair Witch lore has expanded through various media, including
mockumentaries, books, and video games, each adding layers to the mythos. The
story combines elements of real historical witch trials, urban legends, and local
folklore, creating a narrative that blurs the lines between reality and fiction. The Blair
Witch remains an iconic figure in horror, symbolizing the fear of the unknown and
the power of legend.
