Stargate SG1
Stargate SG-1 is a military science fiction adventure television series that’s part of the
larger Stargate franchise. Created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the show
is based on the 1994 film Stargate by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The series
was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and aired from July
27, 1997, to March 13, 2007.
The story of Stargate SG-1 begins about a year after the events of the feature film,
with the United States government discovering that an ancient alien device called
the Stargate can access a network of such devices across a multitude of planets.
The titular team, SG-1, is an elite unit of the United States Air Force, one of
approximately 20 teams from Earth, tasked with exploring the galaxy and defending
against alien threats. The series incorporates elements from Egyptian, Greek, Norse
mythology, and the legend of King Arthur, blending them into its narrative.
Throughout its run, Stargate SG-1 introduced several notable factions:
The Goa’uld: A parasitic alien race that takes humans as hosts, presenting
themselves as gods to enslave various populations. They are the primary
antagonists for much of the series.
The Tok’ra: Symbiotic aliens like the Goa’uld but with a fundamental
difference—they coexist with their hosts on equal terms and oppose the Goa’uld’s
tyranny2.
The Replicators: Self-replicating machines that consume everything in their path
to create more of themselves, posing a significant threat to all life forms.
The Asgard: A highly advanced and benevolent alien race resembling the Roswell
greys, who are allies of Earth and share some of their knowledge with SG-12.
The Ancients: The original builders of the Stargates, an extremely advanced race
that ascended to a higher plane of existence, leaving behind technology and
knowledge that are central to the series’ mythology2.
The Ori: Another group of ascended beings, but unlike the Ancients, they seek to
subjugate the mortal plane by masquerading as deities and demanding worship.
These factions, among others, contribute to the rich tapestry of the Stargate SG-1
universe, making it a beloved series with a deep lore that has captivated fans for
years. The show’s success led to several spin-offs, including Stargate Atlantis and
Stargate Universe, as well as direct-to-DVD films.
