Warhammer 40K: Necrons
The Necrons are one of the most ancient and formidable factions in the Warhammer
40,000 universe. They are a race of robotic skeletal warriors who have lain dormant
in their stasis-tombs for more than 60 million Terran years. Originally an organic
species, the Necrons transferred their consciousness into mechanical bodies to
achieve immortality and to win a war against their ancient rivals.
Appearance and Technology: Necrons are characterized by their skeletal, robotic
appearance, often resembling ancient Egyptian pharaohs and warriors in their
design. Their technology is highly advanced, with weaponry that can strip flesh from
bone and massive constructs that can withstand heavy damage. They are known for
their use of gauss weapons and monolithic ships.
Background and History: The Necrons’ history is shrouded in mystery and darkness.
They were once a proud and living race known as the Necrontyr, who sought to
conquer the galaxy. However, plagued by short lifespans and ravaged by
internecine conflicts, they struck a bargain with the C’tan, star gods of immense
power, to transfer their essences into immortal metal bodies, becoming the
Necrons1. This biotransference granted them the immortality they craved but at a
great cost: they lost their souls and individuality, becoming slaves to the C’tan.
Eventually, the Necrons rebelled against their masters, shattering the C’tan into
shards and taking control of their own destiny.
Culture and Society: The Necron society is a rigid hierarchy led by the Triarch,
consisting of the Silent King and two Triarch Praetorians. Below them are the
nobility, including Overlords, Lords, and Crypteks, who are the keepers of
technological and arcane knowledge. The majority of the Necron forces are made
up of the mindless and endlessly resurrecting Necron Warriors.
Reanimation Protocols: One of the most feared aspects of the Necrons is their ability
to repair themselves even after suffering catastrophic damage. This is due to their
Reanimation Protocols, an army rule that allows Necron models to stand back up
and continue fighting, making them a nearly unstoppable force on the battlefield.
Current State: As the Necrons awaken from their long slumber, they find a galaxy
much changed and teeming with new life forms and empires. Despite the passage
of eons and the loss of many Tomb Worlds, the Necrons are determined to restore
their ancient dynasties to glory and reclaim their dominion over the galaxy.
The Necrons are a testament to the rich lore and intricate storytelling of the
Warhammer 40,000 universe, representing themes of immortality, the
consequences of hubris, and the relentless march of time. Their return to the galaxy
poses a dire threat to all living beings, as they seek to extinguish the light of life and
restore the cold order of their ancient empire.
