Sub Zero
Sub-Zero is a key character in the Mortal
Kombat fighting game series. The name
“Sub-Zero” is actually an alias used by two
characters in the franchise, both of whom
are ninja warriors from the Lin Kuei clan.
They are principally defined by their blue
attire and their ability to control ice in
many forms.
The original Sub-Zero, whose real name is
Bi-Han, first appeared in Mortal Kombat in
1992. He was killed by Scorpion during the
events of the first game, leading to his
younger brother, Kuai Liang, taking over
the mantle of Sub-Zero. Bi-Han later
returns as the undead Noob Saibot,
mastering shadows instead of ice.
Both incarnations of Sub-Zero have been
central figures in the series, with Kuai
Liang often serving as a more heroic
figure compared to his older brother. Sub-
Zero’s storylines often revolve around his
rivalry with Scorpion, which has become
one of the most prominent story elements
in the series.
Sub-Zero is the only character that
appears in every main installment of the
Mortal Kombat series, and he was also the
protagonist of the 1997 spin-off game,
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. His
distinctive design, special abilities, and
finishing moves known as “Fatalities” have
made him one of the most popular
characters in the franchise.
